Suspension Insulator Components

Suspension Insulator Components

Suspension insulators consist of the following elements:

  • Dielectric Shell: Made of toughened glass designed with appropriate properties and shape for optimal performance under specific environmental conditions.
  • Cap: Hot-dip galvanized nodular or ductile malleable cast iron cap.
  • Pin: Hot-dip galvanized forged steel pin.
  • Assembly: The cap and pin are secured onto the glass piece using high-strength aluminous cement to withstand severe thermomechanical stress.

The insulator cap features a stainless steel or phosphor bronze locking device (split pin) which ensures a secure coupling of units.

Additionally, pins can be protected using an anti-corrosion zinc sleeve (sacrificial anode) upon request. This zinc sleeve is highly recommended for insulators deployed on power lines in heavily polluted environments.

Glass Insulator Shell Cross-section

Under long-term electrical stress, contaminants can trigger local arcs, leading to insulator surface carbonization (electrocorrosion). Adequate creepage distance is critical to disperse the electric field strength, reduce the risk of local discharge, and significantly extend the service life of the equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does the model name "U240BP" represent?
The designation is broken down as follows:
  • U: Disc Suspension Insulator
  • 240: Rated mechanical failing load of 240kN (approx. 24 tons)
  • B: Ball and socket coupling type
  • P: Anti-pollution profile design
What are the dimensional specifications of the U240BP insulator?
The standard U240BP insulator features a nominal diameter of 320mm, a nominal spacing (height) of 170mm, and a creepage distance of 550mm. Variations with a 280mm diameter and 450mm creepage distance are also available.
Which standard specifications do these insulators comply with?
The model is designed in accordance with standard IEC60383-1:1993, MOD / GB/T1001.1. The connection structures comply with GB/T4056-2008 (IEC60120:1984, MOD) and BS 3288 part III.
What type of locking pin is default for U240BP?
Unless specified otherwise by customer requirements, the R-pin is the standard locking pin used for the U240BP model. W-pins are also available upon request.
Why is the design of the creepage distance important for toughened glass insulators?
An adequate creepage distance disperses the strength of the electric field along the insulator profile. This prevents local electrical arcs triggered by contaminants, mitigating the risk of surface carbonization (electrocorrosion) and extending the operational lifespan.
Can these insulators be used in highly polluted areas?
Yes. The "P" in U240BP denotes its anti-pollution profile. For highly polluted environments, it is highly recommended to order these insulators equipped with sacrificial zinc sleeves to protect the pins from aggressive corrosion.
