A comprehensive analysis of electrical, mechanical, and chemical innovations in high-strength insulation systems for modern EHV/UHV power transmission networks.
High-voltage overhead transmission lines form the backbone of modern power distribution networks. These lines face severe electrical stresses, heavy mechanical loads, and demanding environmental hazards. Within this framework, suspension disc insulators act as structural links and electrical barriers. The U240BMA toughened glass insulator (complying with standard mechanical ratings of 240kN) is engineered specifically to meet the high mechanical load requirements of EHV (220kV to 500kV) and UHV (above 750kV AC/DC) transmission schemes.
Unlike porcelain or composite polymeric designs, toughened glass suspension insulators provide structural predictability. Toughened glass features a prestressed surface layer that resists micro-crack propagation under heavy loads. If an electrical overload or mechanical impact exceeds design limits, the toughened glass disc shatters into small fragments. This "zero-value" self-shattering characteristic makes damaged units immediately visible, simplifying aerial inspections and ensuring the remaining glass stub retains its mechanical holding power to prevent line drops.
The performance of the U240BMA insulator relies on precision manufacturing. The raw materials—primarily high-purity silica sand, soda ash, dolomite, and feldspar—are processed to create a homogeneous soda-lime-silicate glass structure. Any impurities, such as nickel sulfide inclusions, are minimized to prevent spontaneous failure under load.

Our tempering process subjects the glass shell to controlled thermal cooling. Rapid air jets freeze the outer surfaces while the core cools slowly. This creates compressive stresses on the outer shell and tensile stresses in the core. The compressive prestress (typically exceeding 100 MPa) prevents external stress cracks from reaching the core, resulting in high thermal shock resistance and high mechanical load limits.
As power transmission evolves toward higher voltages and smarter grids, QOCI continues to develop advanced insulator technologies:
We are researching the integration of micro-sensors directly within the metal cap of U240BMA insulators. These sensors monitor structural tension, leakage currents, and local temperature, transmitting data in real time to help operators identify potential line faults before they happen.
We continue to refine our Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) silicone coatings. These coatings are applied directly to the glass shell to improve hydrophobic performance and control leakage currents in heavily polluted coastal and industrial environments.
QOCI is upgrading to total oxygen combustion kilns. This technology reduces carbon emissions and energy use during glass melting while maintaining the thermal stability and chemical purity of the finished glass.
The U240BMA line of toughened glass insulators is designed for a variety of demanding environmental and operational scenarios:
Jiangxi QOCI Electric Co., Ltd. operates a highly automated manufacturing facility in Luxi County, Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province. By integrating modern automation into our casting, cooling, and assembly lines, we achieve high consistency in every batch of U240BMA insulators.
Our supply chain is designed for resilience. Our plant maintains strategic reserves of high-grade raw materials and operates total oxygen kilns to ensure consistent glass quality. With an annual production capacity of 39,000 tons, we can support large-scale international grid projects while meeting strict delivery schedules. All production steps—from raw material mixing to high-voltage testing—are monitored electronically to ensure full compliance with international standards.
Global utilities and EPC contractors demand strict compliance with international manufacturing and testing standards. QOCI ensures its U240BMA insulators meet all requirements:
